Our Story
More Than a Charity. A Movement.
Founded in 2014, Checkmates Charitable Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness, funding research, and supporting those impacted by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ostomies, colon cancer, and mental health challenges.
At Checkmates, we believe no one should fight alone.
We stand on the frontline in the battle against ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease while working tirelessly to improve the lives of people living with ostomies. With an estimated 700,000 to 1,000,000 Americans living with a colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy, the need for advocacy, resources, and community support has never been greater.
Despite the growing number of ostomy patients across North America, resources and funding for the ostomy community remain critically limited. That is why Checkmates is committed to building meaningful partnerships throughout the United States and Canada to create impactful fundraising events, awareness campaigns, and support initiatives that unite communities without borders.
Why?
Our founder and CEO, Justin Mirigliani, was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in December 2002. After battling the disease for 12 years, Justin underwent life-saving surgery to remove his entire large intestine due to a severe precancerous condition. Since September 24, 2015, he has lived with a permanent ileostomy.
Rather than allowing his diagnosis to define him, Justin turned adversity into purpose.
Driven by the belief that “Nothing is Impossible with an Ostomy,” he has dedicated his life to helping others facing IBD and breaking the stigma surrounding ostomy life. Through advocacy, fitness, public awareness, and community outreach, Justin continues to inspire others to live confidently and fearlessly.
Justin is currently pursuing a goal to become the first ostomate to bench press 405 pounds — proving that strength is not defined by limitations.
Hockey. Community. Hope.
What began as a personal journey has grown into a movement.
Justin created the Checkmates hockey team, which competes in charity hockey events alongside NHL alumni to raise funds and awareness for the IBD and ostomy communities. Through these events, Checkmates has already raised more than $70,000 to support individuals and organizations making a difference.
Checkmates also proudly collaborates with organizations such as “Embracing Ostomy Life,” founded by NFL legend Rolf Benirschke, and supports initiatives connected with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Together with our partners, supporters, families, and communities, we believe that one day we will say:
“Checkmate” to IBD.
Until then, we will never stop fighting to help those living with IBD, ostomies, colon cancer, and mental health challenges live the fullest lives possible.
